Competency booklet

This short course includes a practical skills session for those clinicians who are novice to otoscopy, irrigation, and instrumentation. Following the study day, students are encouraged to undertake self-directed study and a competency booklet to complete with their designated practice assessor in their place of work.

Suitable for newly qualified nurses, audiologists, paramedics and occupational health clinicians, who have not undertaken any ear care assessment and management.

Learning Outcomes

  • an understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the ear
  • an understanding of the prevention of ear problems, considering the patient holistically
  • a foundation of knowledge on which to base practical aural toilet, wax instrumentation and ear irrigation according to their own level of practice competence
  • an understanding of people with hearing loss, tinnitus, and the use of aids to hearing
  • an understanding of decontamination of equipment
  • an understanding of documentation in relation to ear care
  • the ability to undertake ear care within the boundaries and limits of the clinician’s professional competence, responsibility and accountability
  • an understanding to complete the competency handbook, consistent with their individual level of skill and knowledge
