Outline Content

Health Care Assistants continue to take on new tasks. One area in which they could have an impact is linked to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The GMS contract targets specific areas relating to these diseases. The HCA could effectively assist the practice and their nurses to achieve these targets by developing their knowledge and skills, and having the ability to demonstrate to patients how to correctly use inhaler devices, volume spacer devices and peak flow monitoring.

Learning Outcomes

  • A basic understanding of Asthma and COPD
  • A basic understanding of Disease Management
  • Ability to demonstrate various inhaler device techniques
  • Ability to demonstrate use of peak flow meters and monitoring
  • An understanding of accountability issues and boundaries of the HCA role

Section Headings

  • Explanation of Asthma and COPD
  • Management
  • Inhalers
  • Peak Flow Measurement
I enjoyed the usage of inhalers because you can work out which inhaler suits people.
