Guidelines - or tethers?31 Mar 2008
An article from our bi-monthly newsletter
It is difficult working in Primary Care, isn't it? One word that doesn't make life any easier is "guideline". The question we have to ask today is "Why are there so many?"
Let's take Type 2 Diabetes as an example, as managed in Primary Care in the United Kingdom. Plainly we need a template to guide us in the way we manage things, so what do we have to choose from?
- IDF Global Guidelines
- NICE Guidelines
- SIGN Guidelines
- Diabetes UK Guidelines
- St Vincent Declaration
- Local Guidelines
And then there's QOF.
Do we really need all these guidelines? Is Type 2 Diabetes in Bradford any different from Type 2 Diabetes in Brisbane? Or Buenos Aires? Is it managed in a different way? Perhaps local cultures may differ as regards lifestyle changes, but as far as medication is concerned everything is the same.
Let's all sing together. Could we unify all guidelines to the IDF standard? It contains everything that is needed.
